College Fair Brings Nearly 100 Colleges Together

  Day and night sessions at Kirkwood to accommodate more participants On Wednesday, Sept. 21, a Kirkwood Community College recreation facility will be transformed into a “higher education shopping mall,” in two different sessions. 1,200-1,500 prospective students and their parents can compare many college choices in one location.

9/11 memorial service to take place at the Courthouse 7 p.m. Sunday

Vinton area veterans will lead a 9/11 ceremony at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, at the Benton County courthouse in Vinton. They will line up at the  new jail and march with the firemen pulling the old pumper to the front of the courthouse. There will be a brief ceremony.  Everyone is invited.

9/11 Memorial service planned at Spencer's Grove

'Idiot Jam' returns for Vinton to raise funds for Dollars for Scholars

Brian Parr plays his guitar at the 2010 'Idiot Jam.' The 2011 event takes place Saturday night.      The Seventh Annual Todd Frank Guitar Jam, also called the "Idiot Jam," will begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday, September 10, at the Vinton-Shellsburg high school auditorium, at  218 W 21st St in Vinton. There will be a free will offering to benefit the Vinton Area Dollars for Scholars. This is a nationwide assembly of people who have traveled to Vinton to put on a concert for the public,      This group started with an acoustic guitar player in Minnesota meeting another player from Wisconsin, who introduces him to yet another from Indiana.

PEO Chapter HG to meet Monday

  PEO Chapter HG will meet Monday, September 12th at 6:30 p.m.         at the home of Cindy Elwick. THios will be a salad supper         followed by the regular business meeting.

Iowa DNR to host hunter education at Izaak Walton

The Iowa Dept. of Natural Resources will be hosting a hunter education course at the Izaak Walton League north of Vinton.  The course will be two days beginning on Saturday September 17th and ending on Sunday September 18th.  Students 11 years of age and older are allowed to attend the classes.  Students should go the www.

CP FRIENDS OF LIBRARY PLANNING TO HELP YOU MAKE ENDS MEET

  Center Point Friends of the Library is hosting a beginning couponing workshop Sunday, October 2, at 2 p.m. in the Library basement. The $10 fee covers the class and couponing starter kit. Seating is limited to 40 and registration is due by Monday, Sept. 26. The afternoon will begin with an introduction to couponing, then a question and answer period followed by refreshments, idea and/or coupon swapping and socializing.

Cedar River Watershed Coalition to meet

  The Cedar River Watershed Coalition’s next meeting will be held Friday, September 16th. In an exciting development, Richard Sloan of the Lime Creek Watershed Council has offered to host a conservation tour of his farm (3046 Harrison Ave, Rowley IA) at 11:30 am prior to the meeting. He will show the practices he has found most useful in controlling soil erosion and limiting nutrient loss, and will discuss how that benefits the Lime Creek watershed.

GENEALOGY WORKSHOP AT CP MUSEUM SUN. SEPT. 11

    Jeanette Matheny Haars will give a presentation on "Getting Started on Genealogy" at the Center Point Historical Society Depot Museum in Center Point this Sunday, Sept. 11, at 2 p.m.  The workshop is free.  Jeanette, originally from Center Point, has been doing genealogy for 20 years and is a long time volunteer at the Genealogical Society of Linn County.

Benton County Gun Training Classes

  A law which went into effect on January 1, 2011 requires the Sheriff of each county to issue a permit to carry weapons to any person 21 years of age or older who is not addicted to alcohol, not likely to use a weapon unlawfully or in such a manner as would endanger the person’s self or others, is not a felon, and has not been convicted of a serious or aggravated misdemeanor in the past three years.
